Description

Tone Wase is a Nara-born early-season persimmon, discovered as an early-ripening mutation of Hiratanenashi following the Ise Bay Typhoon. It matures approximately 10–15 days earlier than Hiratanenashi, bringing the first taste of Nara’s open-field persimmon season from late September.

Its appeal is its soft, succulent flesh and abundant juice. Rather than a dense, firm bite, Tone Wase offers a tender, smooth texture that releases plenty of juice with each mouthful—one of the defining characteristics of the Hiratanenashi family.

Nara is Japan’s No.2 persimmon-producing prefecture, with its major production centred around Gojo and the surrounding areas. But the region’s reputation is built on more than volume. While early fruit traditionally commands higher prices, Nara growers have developed a culture of not rushing harvest simply to be first, instead paying close attention to colour, maturity and eating quality.

That quality is supported by well-drained growing areas and careful orchard management—from pruning and controlling fruit load to directing the tree’s nutrients toward fewer, better-developed fruits.

Serve & Store

  • Storage: Keep refrigerated at around 5°C, preferably wrapped or inside a bag to minimise moisture loss. Enjoy promptly for the best texture.
  • Serving: Enjoy chilled and cut just before eating. Tone Wase is especially enjoyable while it retains a gentle firmness, with its naturally juicy flesh becoming softer as it matures.
