Description
Meet Akioh, Fukuoka’s exceptional sweet persimmon whose name means “Autumn King” in Japanese. Developed over nearly a decade by Fukuoka Prefecture, this distinctive variety brings together two celebrated Japanese persimmons: Fuyu and Taishu.
From Fuyu, Akioh inherits its beautiful deep orange-red colour, while Taishu contributes its wonderfully crisp, satisfying bite. What makes Akioh even more remarkable is that it contains very few seeds, allowing you to enjoy its generous, juicy flesh with little interruption.
Beneath its vibrant skin lies a rich, concentrated sweetness and a refreshing crunch. Unlike persimmons prized for their soft, melting texture, Akioh is particularly enjoyable while firm, when its crisp flesh and abundant juice can be appreciated together.
Akioh is grown exclusively in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan's leading region for sweet persimmon production. This is also a particularly delicate variety to cultivate. Its thin skin can be easily marked by wind-blown leaves, and its fruit is more prone to dropping from the tree, requiring careful attention throughout the growing season.
Harvested mainly from late October to mid-November, Akioh offers a distinctive expression of Japan’s autumn harvest: deep sweetness, a crisp and juicy texture, and the convenience of almost no seeds.
