Description
Known as the “Queen of Western Pears,” La France is prized for a texture and aroma unlike ordinary pears. Once properly ripened, its flesh becomes remarkably smooth and melting, releasing abundant juice with an elegant, honeyed fragrance and refined sweetness.
La France is a fruit that develops its best flavour after harvest. It does not fully ripen on the tree; instead, careful post-harvest ripening allows its starches to convert into sugars, transforming the firm fruit into the soft, aromatic pear for which it is celebrated.
Yamagata is Japan’s leading La France-producing region, with cultivation dating back to 1903. Its cool climate, long sunshine hours and fertile soils have supported generations of specialised growing and ripening techniques, and Yamagata-grown fruit now represents around 80% of Japan’s La France market.
The result is a pear that rewards patience: silky flesh, dripping juice and a deep, sweet fragrance that opens fully only at perfect ripeness.
Serve & Store
- Ripening: Keep at room temperature. It is ready when the skin around the stem begins to wrinkle, the stem starts to wither, and the area around it yields gently to pressure.
- Serving: When fully ripe and fragrant, chill for 1–2 hours before eating. Cut just before serving to enjoy its melting texture and abundant juice at their best.
