Description
Taishu is a distinctive Japanese sweet persimmon celebrated for its exceptionally crisp bite and abundant juice. Each bite delivers a satisfying crunch, followed by refreshing juiciness and delicate sweetness. Its remarkably light, crisp texture sets it apart from the softer persimmons traditionally enjoyed in Japan.
Its appearance is equally distinctive. Unlike persimmons that develop a deep orange colour as they ripen, Taishu can be wonderfully sweet while its golden-yellow skin still carries hints of green. Fine, ring-like markings known as jomon may also appear on the surface. These natural markings are often associated with well-developed sweetness and are a characteristic of the variety, not a sign of damage.
Fukuoka is Japan’s leading sweet persimmon-producing region, with a long-established cultivation tradition centred around the Chikugo River basin. Throughout autumn, the region produces a succession of distinctive persimmon varieties, with Taishu reaching its season around October. Combining its beautiful golden appearance with an unusually crisp texture and generous juice, Taishu offers a refreshing expression of Fukuoka’s celebrated persimmon harvest.
