Description
Shonai Persimmon is a celebrated autumn fruit from Yamagata, centred on the Hiratanenashi variety. Its story began in Tsuruoka in 1885, where a naturally seedless persimmon was discovered before spreading across Japan for its flavour and remarkable ease of eating.
With no seeds, finely textured flesh and a rich yet elegant sweetness, Shonai Persimmon is immediately approachable. Enjoyed while firm, it offers a fresh, juicy bite; as it ripens, the flesh becomes increasingly soft and luscious, eventually developing an almost melting texture on the palate. The fruit is typically harvested from late October through late November, making it one of Yamagata’s signature autumn flavours.
What makes Shonai especially distinctive is its connection to place. The Shonai region is regarded as the home of Japan’s seedless persimmon tradition, and growers continue to carefully manage cultivation through spring before removing astringency after harvest to bring out the fruit’s naturally sweet, smooth character.
