Description

Ponkan is a Japanese citrus known for its distinct aroma, soft flesh, and high juice content. It has a naturally high sweetness with low acidity, making it suitable even for those who dislike sour fruits.

The peel appears thicker than a mandarin, but it is soft and easy to remove by hand. While there are a few seeds, the segment membranes are thin and tender, allowing the fruit to be eaten whole without peeling the inner skin.

Origin & Production

Kochi Prefecture is one of Japan’s leading Ponkan-producing regions. Within Kochi, Toyo Town is the largest production area, and the Tadate district of Susaki City is also well known. These fruits are collectively referred to as “Tosa Ponkan.”

Thanks to warm temperatures and long hours of sunlight, Ponkan from Kochi develops strong sweetness and rich fragrance. Both open-field and greenhouse cultivation are practiced, enabling stable production from winter through spring and placing Kochi among Japan’s top Ponkan shipping regions.

Taste & Texture

  • Pronounced natural sweetness

  • Mild acidity

  • Juicy, tender flesh

  • Easy to peel due to space between peel and flesh

Storage

Ponkan is sensitive to dryness. To prevent shriveling, place the fruit in a plastic bag and store it in a cool indoor location, away from direct sunlight.
