Description
A rare citrus harvested and shipped in early summer, this fruit is a cross between Kara Mandarin and Ponkan. It is prized for its rich sweetness, balanced acidity, and delicate skin that peels easily by hand.
With a sugar content of around 13° Brix+, it offers a full-bodied sweetness lifted by a clean, refreshing acidity. The result is a mature, rounded citrus profile with soft, generous juice and a refined balance that only fully ripened fruit can deliver.
Grown mainly in Tara Town and Karatsu City in Saga, Japan, it is left to ripen fully on the tree, which gives it the depth of flavour that has made it known as a sought-after “spring citrus.”
What makes it distinctive is its exceptionally long tree-ripening period. Rather than being picked early, the fruit remains on the tree through the cooler months and is harvested from late March to early April, after nearly a full year of slowly drawing in nutrients. This extended maturation concentrates both sweetness and aroma.
