Wakayama Prefecture Nanko Ume (Japanese Plum)
Nanko Ume, a highly regarded plum variety from Wakayama Prefecture, is celebrated for its exceptionally thick flesh, delicate thin skin, and remarkably soft texture. Known as one of Japan’s finest plums, it offers a rich, fruity aroma and deep, full-bodied flavor.
Carefully cultivated in Wakayama’s ideal climate by experienced growers, these plums embody the excellence and tradition of Japanese fruit production. Their superior quality makes them especially suited for traditional preparations such as ume liqueur and pickled plums, where their natural richness truly shines.
Taste Profile
Nanko Ume is distinguished by its intense fragrance, fruity sweetness, and smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture.
When processed, it develops a luxurious depth of flavor with a mellow, well-rounded finish.
Recommended Uses
・Umeshu (plum liqueur)
・Ume syrup
・Umeboshi (pickled plums)
Perfect for crafting premium homemade preserves that capture the essence of the season.
Storage & Handling (Important)
Store in a cool, well-ventilated place or refrigerate upon arrival.
Please process promptly, as fresh green plums are highly perishable and their quality changes over time.
Important Safety Notice
Eating raw green plums may be harmful due to a natural compound called amygdalin, which can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, convulsions, and in severe cases, respiratory distress (cyanide poisoning).
Fully ripened yellow plums are safe to eat; however, green plums must always be processed (such as making umeshu or umeboshi) before consumption to ensure safety.
Enjoy the exquisite quality of Wakayama-grown Nanko Ume, and bring a refined taste of Japanese seasonal tradition into your home.
